BIND and Named – Name Services

Name Services provide the translation from human readable hostnames, such as student1.mtc-llc.net, to IP Addresses, like 192.168.25.21. In small networks the /etc/hosts file on each host can be used for this, while larger networks require centralized management of this service with software such as BIND.

This section of the DataBook contains information that pertains to the Berkeley Internet Name Domain system, or BIND. There are other name service servers, but BIND is the most common and has been around for the longest.
